Prefill Form 1099-NEC

It fetches the current Form 1099-NEC straight from the IRS, totals what you posted to each counterparty over a closed calendar year, and writes one sheet per payee who reaches the reporting threshold. It fills the payer and recipient identity blocks and box 1, asks once for backup withholding and the handful of facts the ledger cannot carry, and leaves the state block deliberately empty because state withholding is a determination, not a transcription.

How the skill answers

Every step of the run, in order, with the card each one returns. A step that hands its work to another skill says which one.

  1. You ask

    Can you fill our 1099s?

  2. Settle the ground
  3. Refuse an open year
  4. Fetch the template
  5. Find the payees
  6. Check identity before anything else
  7. Ask the checklist once
  8. Write the fields
  9. Return one PDF per payee
  10. You get

One 1099-NEC per contractor for the closed year, filled from posted payments: the payer and recipient identity blocks, and box 1a from what you actually paid them. Backup withholding and the handful of facts the ledger cannot carry are asked once. The state block stays empty, because where the work was performed is a determination and not a transcription.

Frequently asked questions

Does this file my 1099s?

No. It produces PDFs. Copy A reaches the IRS through IRIS, and Well holds no IRIS credential, transmits nothing and receives no acknowledgement. You or your preparer file them.

Why is the state block empty?

Because boxes 5, 6 and 7 are a determination about where the work was performed and which state's rules apply to it. That is applying state tax law rather than reading your ledger, so the skill leaves the block empty and says so rather than printing a number you might file.

How does it decide who gets a sheet?

By the year total of posted payments per counterparty, against the threshold the current IRS instructions state. The threshold is read from the instructions for that year rather than carried in the skill, because the IRS has changed it.

Will it tell me if someone is an employee rather than a contractor?

No. Nonemployee compensation against wages is a worker classification question, it decides between this form and a W-2, and the skill refuses it rather than answering it wrong.

What about a payee that is a corporation?

Corporations are generally exempt from 1099-NEC reporting and the ledger does not reliably carry legal form, so the skill asks per payee and drops the ones you confirm are exempt.
